Today My Father...

Eulogy to Marcos Antonio Catherini Prieto (1951-2011)

Today my father's body is laid to rest. The world may not mourn his loss (they might not even know who he was), but I knew him and my world and the worlds of all those who knew him are now forever changed. Changed because of his extraordinary heart, which was visible by his kindness, his thoughtfulness, his welcoming smile, and his immersible hugs; he truly transformed the lives of those around him!

Today my father is remembered.
He taught by example and lived in the service of others. His hands were constantly at work, whether to organize or straighten a small pile of papers at someone's desk, or simply to fix this doorknob or that stuck drawer, or even if just to change a burnt out light bulb. Papai went about serving others whenever and wherever he went. He believed that the best time to do something for someone was right away, and his amazing ability to be prepared and organized allowed him to do just that.

Today my father's spirit soars on high.
"O Grande" ("the great", for that was how I affectionately called him), always spoke and dreamed about the day when he would be able to stop worrying about his worldly labors and focus on doing the Lord's work. He was at his happiest went he was employed in the service of God: in the service of his fellow beings. His presence without compulsory means demanded respect, love, and appreciation for all things that edify and come to Christ. A more humble, subtle, and gentle giant could not have arisen from that GREAT big town of ITU.

Today my father goes somewhere I can not follow.
The pain of this separation is real and insurmountable! But he has left me an example that I can follow, and by doing so, I can find my way back to him, and back to my Father in Heaven. The Savior said: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light" (Matthew 11:28~30). Christ died and suffered all so that he could succor his children in times of need such as these.

Today my father lives because Jesus lives!
And because of Him, we now know "the way, the truth and the light" (John 14:6). Thanks be to God for his Son Jesus Christ! Thanks be to God for the son, brother, father, uncle, grandparent, and friend Marcos Prieto. May we set our gait to emulate his, and may the rest of our journey's quiet moments be found in our devotion to God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit.

Today my father watches over me.
And to him I say: Thank you. I love you. I miss you. I am proud to be your son. I am humbled by your amazing character, and motivated by your devotion to God. I'll think of you day and night, honor your name, and pray God to help me walk in your footsteps, as you walked in His Son Jesus' footsteps.

'Till we meet again! Com amor eterno,

-Marquinhos
("little Marcos", for that was how he affectionately called me)

I see Metta is not the only beautiful writer in this amazing family. I was really touched by your words. Dads are special and irreplaceable but we are so grateful to know that you'll be able to see him again in the hereafters. It still doesn't make the loss easy and you'll be in our prayers. All our love, Mel, Pete and Will Watt. xx
